Why Baby Boomers in North America are Thriving: Exploring 5 Key Factors

Updated: Jan 5

Welcome to Another Discussion On Earth.

Today we will discuss the dominance the Baby Boomer generation has held over the world. Born between 1946 and 1964 Baby Boomers are currently between 57-75 years old and account for 7.6 million people in the U.S. alone. The term Baby Boomer is derived from an unprecedented post-war spike in birth rates. From political office to high-ranking government officials, the boomers still control America. Here are the 5 reasons why.

Political Power is a strong ally for the Boomers. They started to enter the House of Representatives at a young age. You can thank the Constitutional Amendment which lowered the voting age from 21 years old to 18 years old during their generation. to the boomers. By the time the median Boomer was 25, (the youngest you can be to serve), they already made up 10 percent of the House. Today, in the Senate Boomers remain the majority and their numbers have risen slightly from the last Congress and the previous one. The last four presidents were Boomers, and the 2024 presidential election is shaping up in the same manner.

Economic Value plays a huge role in the continued dominance of the Boomers. They benefited greatly from America's economic growth over the second half of the 20th century. The economy was very prosperous during the Boomer's childhoods as the U.S. became a force to be reckoned with. As adults, they had an easier time buying low-cost housing than those of the same age today. According to Gary Berman (President & CEO, Director of Tricon) the Boomers in their 30s, owned a third of real estate by value in the '90s compared to millennials today who own only 4%. Their wealth has since doubled.

Job Security is another thing keeping the Boomers in the top spot. A much higher share of Baby Boomers have four-year degrees and can work white-collar, less physically demanding jobs. These are positions they are not stepping out of anytime soon. Almost 20% of Americans ages 65 and older were employed this year according to Pew Research Center. Similar to the political situations, the Boomers just will not budge if they do not have to. Advancements in healthcare have kept more people healthier longer, and the strong job market has made it easier to work longer.

Impactful Influence plays a huge role in the Boomer's reign. They are credited with ushering in the culture of America. Some of the most important changes in history align side by side with this generation, The Civil Rights Movement, the Women's Rights Movement, and Anti-War Protests. So many sacrifices and changes have been made because of the Boomers' sheer determination and hard work. Prominent figures have led the way as Boomers, whether it be political, financial, technological, entertainment, or economic influence. The face of America stands with this generation, and that impact is ingrained in the country. With this also comes a sense of entitlement.

The Right Place and the Right Time are the only explanations honestly. Every generation after the Boomers has done its fair share, and they are doing pretty good in their own right. Boomers just came into prominence at the right time, after a devasting world war. Increases in wages, thriving businesses, and an increase in the variety and quantity of products for consumers put them in a great position. Being responsible for a lot of firsts will allow you longevity and knowledge over the ones that come after you. So, with that being said, we salute the Baby Boomers and their continued success. But we also say, "Step aside old man. It's our time.
